Normal Heights is a mostly residential community with the main commercial district located along the main thoroughfare, Adams Avenue. Annexed to the city in 1924, it is now known as one of the most walkable neighborhoods in San Diego. Many of the original homes still stand, and have in many case been remodeled more than once. Cherokee Park, Adams, Park, and Adams North are three distinct neighborhoods making up Normal Heights. Architectural styles vary. It is not uncommon to see Bungalows, Brick Estates, Spanish Colonial and contemporary homes on the same street. Home prices have risen considerably in the last few years, but there are still opportunities to find some moderately affordable housing. As a community, Normal Heights is hip, artsy and rich in culture. Adams Avenue is host to many good taverns, restaurants, trendy businesses and antique stores. Adding to the local flavor are new and used bookstores and record stores. Normal Heights hosts both the Roots Festival and the Adams Avenue Street Fair which offer food, fun, and music from a myriad of genres to bring people together from all over the county.
