Windansea

Windansea Beach is a world-famous surf break immortalized in Tom Wolfe’s “The Pump House Gang.”  Named for a hotel that burned down in the 1940’s, Windansea’s most photographed landmark is its “surf shack,” a palapa (palm-thatched umbrella) constructed in 1946.  Overlooking the shack is Windansea’s only parking lot, a narrow, 18-space lot which limits non-local visits.  There are no public facilities here, and the powerful currents make the area unsuitable for swimming, but perfect for dramatic views.  Homes in the  Windansea area range from condominum to cottage to estate, and the narrow streets and architectural variety give this popular neighborhood a casual, beachy feel.  Windansea is walking distance from La Jolla High School and the Village of La Jolla.
